Noted transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Tottenham Hotspur and a potential link with Lorenzo Insigne.
The Napoli forward, valued at £43.2m on Transfermarkt, is entering the final year of his contract with the Serie A side, and having just come off a season where he scored 19 goals, it’s no surprise to see that a number of clubs are showing an interest in signing him.
According to Italian journalist Paolo Paganini speaking on radio station Kiss Kiss Napoli (quoted by Area Napoli), Insigne has ‘many new admirers’, one of them being Tottenham Hotspur.
Would you like to see Spurs sign Insigne?
Yes
No
Speaking about the matter on Matt Hayes – Tottenham Blog, Romano claimed that was not the case, however, and that there has yet to be a concrete approach from the club in any form when it comes to Insigne and his future:
“From what I am told there is nothing with Tottenham. Of course I understand the rumours because you know when there is a player like Lorenzo Insigne out of contract in one year, with Tottenham of course it’s a big opportunity, so many clubs will be interested and let’s see if Napoli will decide to extend his contract or if Insigne will say ‘I want to change, I want to try something different’.
“So at the moment, the Insigne situation in general is really open, and everything could happen on this side. But what I’m told is that with Tottenham, at the moment there is still nothing going on. Napoli have not received anything and also, the agent of Insigne has not received anything from Tottenham.
“Of course, Paratici knows the player, he’s Italian, he’s one of the best players here in Serie A for many years. But at the moment, there is nothing serious I would say between Tottenham and Insigne.”
TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s claim regarding Lorenzo Insigne and Tottenham Hotspur…
It’s a good thing that Tottenham are supposedly not showing an interest in him, because the reality is they don’t really need him.
If Harry Kane were to depart this summer, with reports suggesting that Spurs will not let that happen, then they might look for someone like Insigne to be a top-level signing to replace him.
Instead, they look to be searching down a level with someone like Danny Ings to play alongside and rotate with Kane, possibly because his asking price of £25-£30m (Football Terrace, via GiveMeSport) might be more reasonable for them.
He might be someone for them to approach next season if he does become a free agent, but for now it just wouldn’t make the most sense to try and pursue him.
