Bayern Munich and France star Kingsley Coman has spoken out in defence of teammate Benjamin Pavard, who has been on the receiving end of criticism during his country’s World Cup campaign.
After starting the opening game against Australia, Pavard has not featured in either of France’s games since and has been slated by teammate Ousmane Dembele and coach Didier Deschamps for his attitude and performances.
Pavard has also reportedly fallen out with Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann, and could be on his way out of Munich in January.
However, the 26-year-old winger defended Pavard during a press conference, giving the wantaway defender his full backing, despite the reported criticism from his other national teammates.
“I spoke to him a bit after the game. I know that Benjamin is someone who works hard and is very motivated. I have no worries regarding his level. I know that he will be ready for the rest of the tournament and will give his best,” Coman stated.
TIF thoughts on Pavard…
The 26-year-old full-back reportedly wants to leave Bayern Munich, having lost his starting spot in the XI following the arrival of Noussair Mazaroui from Ajax in the summer, and losing his place for the national team is far from what he would have wanted during this tournament.
Although he was at fault for Australia’s opening goal in the first game, he deserves another chance to prove why he should still start for the reigning champions, and put himself in the shop window for January or beyond.
The defender is a talented player, as evidenced by his famous rocket goal against Argentina as France lifted the World Cup in 2018, but a fresh start with a renewed attitude may be best for him to stop his career from quickly falling off a cliff.
