Fans of Celtic have been reacting on Facebook after a post relayed claims from former striker Frank McAvennie, who now believes John Kennedy could be appointed as the Hoops manager on a permanent basis.
The 37-year-old has been in temporary charge of the Glasgow giants ever since Neil Lennon resigned back in February following a 1-0 defeat to Scottish Premiership minnows Ross County.
Several big names have been linked with replacing Lennon at Parkhead, including the likes of Eddie Howe, Roy Keane and Chris Wilder, but McAvennie thinks a recent event may mean Kennedy is set to become the new Celtic boss on a long-term basis.
In an interview with Football Insider, the 61-year-old claimed Stephen Welsh’s new four-year contract could mean Kennedy is about to become Lennon’s permanent successor: “How can you sanction a four-year contract when there’s no manager in place, that’s why I was thinking it,” he said.
“I know he’s a kid but what if new management comes in and buys three new centre-halves? He won’t be playing. It baffles me. I’m sure the new guy will want to see his own players. I thought John was behind it, and John rates him highly.”
However, it’s clear the Celtic supporters are hoping someone else receives the role.
Time will tell whether McAvennie’s claim will come to pass, but there seems to be an element of logic to his prediction. However, judging by these comments, perhaps they should be taken with a pinch of salt and not all that seriously.
