Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie does not believe Tottenham will gamble on Steve Cooper this summer.
This comes after The Telegraph reported that the north London club are admirers of the Swansea City boss.
Tottenham, of course, need a new permanent manager following Jose Mourinho’s recent dismissal. At just 29 years of age, it is hard to imagine Ryan Mason getting the gig full-time.
Is Daniel Levy the biggest problem at Spurs right now?
Yes
No
Hendrie, however, does not think that new manager will be Cooper, with the ex-Villa player expecting Daniel Levy to turn to a big name similar to Mourinho or Mauricio Pochettino.
Discussing the links to Cooper in an exclusive interview with TIF, Hendrie said:
“I can’t see how they would take a gamble on a Championship manager. I might be wrong, but I just feel… would the fans be happy with that? Personally, I don’t think they would. That’s no disrespect to Steve Cooper; he’s done excellent in the Championship.”
Hendrie later went on to add:
“You’ve got to look at what managers have achieved and what they’ve won and then that’s when you sort of take reflection on what managers come into the club. When you look at when Poch was there, Mourinho was there, you just think that’s a big backward step.”
As well as Cooper, Tottenham have also been linked to RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann, with The Telegraph again reporting on the north London club’s interest.
With Bayern Munich also said to be keen on the German, though, Levy may very well find himself having to turn to an alternative name like Cooper.
