Chelsea are ready to pounce upon the uncertain future of Barcelona midfielder Gavi, who is locked in a legal battle over the legitimacy of his contract.

What’s the latest on Gavi to Chelsea?

According to AS, the Blues are keenly monitoring the 18-year-old, whose career in Catalonia has been thrown into the balance.

As per The Athletic, the Spaniard agreed on a bumper new contract in September 2022, however, a court revoked it after his wages have been exceeding the club’s salary limit. Gavi has been re-registered as a youth player and a new release clause means that he could leave the club in the summer for free.

Chelsea, who could possibly face Financial Fair Play issues, are interested in snapping up this generational talent.

The report also details that the youngster’s agent, Ivan De la Pena, has already held a meeting with the West London hierarchy to determine a possible future plan.

Should Chelsea sign Gavi?

The £158m-rated wonderkid broke into the Barcelona team in 2021 at just 17 years of age, and has established himself as one of the world’s most promising youngsters.

To underline his effervescent quality, the playmaker won the Golden Boy award and has become one of Xavi’s most reliable and consistent performers.

The 19-cap international has already made 40 appearances this season and has registered eight goal contributions. He has also been projected into worldwide stardom thanks to impressive displays during the World Cup in Qatar. The prodigy scored in the group stage thumping of Costa Rica and became the third youngest player to score in a World Cup match.

The midfielder would undoubtedly inject some pace, precision, and technique into an underperforming Chelsea midfield.

Enzo Fernandez, who only joined the club in January, is Chelsea’s highest assister (two) from midfield this season and could form a formidable partnership with the 5 foot 8 gem – with the Argentine sitting at the base of the midfield, Gavi could occupy a more advanced role to maximise his attacking qualities and provide some much-needed creativity.

Former Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri described the £115k-per-week star as a man with “huge potential.”

Ex-Spain boss Luis Enrique has also raved over Gavi’s gift and said:

“He has personality, bravery, quality, football to play at this level and on top of it all he’s physically superb. He can move between the lines, play, deliver the last pass, he doesn’t lose the ball. He’s not just the future of the national team; fortunately, he’s also the present.”

It would be an extraordinary coup for the West London outfit to land one of the world’s most exciting players at zero cost and it will definitely be a saga to keep an eye on over the summer.
