Newcastle United have held talks with Monaco B starlet Mehdi Zerkane, according to L’equipe.
The 19-year-old is out of contract in the summer and the Magpies could try and lure the winger to St. James’ Park.
The report claims that Newcastle are waiting to appoint a new manager before pursuing their interest – Rafa Benitez’ future in the North East is yet to be resolved.
Zerkane has made five appearances in the UEFA Youth League this term and is attracting interest from two other Ligue 1 clubs.
Good move for Newcastle?
Zerkane is part of the Monaco youth setup and clearly has potential. With the likes of Kylian Mbappe progressing through the Monaco academy set up in recent times, the French club’s set up is clearly impressive and Zerkane could be another one set for stardom in the future. The 19-year-old is out of contract this summer and the Magpies should take advantage of his situation – it could turn out to be an intelligent and shrewd piece of business in years to come. The Frenchman’s value could rocket and with that in mind, the move is a low risk one.

Likely to happen?
The midfielder is out of contract this summer and it leaves him available to talk to other clubs. Newcastle have expressed an interest but with question marks around Benitez’ future, the deal may not be a priority right now and it makes his arrival less likely. Other clubs are showing an interest and with so much uncertainty at Newcastle at the moment, Zerkane may want a move elsewhere. However, the pull of the Premier League could be strong.
