Gary Stevens believes Tottenham are capable of keeping up with Manchester City and Liverpool next season as long as they sign the right players.
The former Spurs player shared that Mauricio Pochettino’s current squad was decent as he could form a really talented starting line-up, but didn’t think there was enough depth when you compare the squad to Man City’s and Liverpool’s.
Stevens shared he was confident that Spurs would spend money on recruiting players this summer, and if they get their recruitment policy right then they could chase the two best sides in England next season.
“I think the Spurs squad is decent, the starting eleven is really talented and strong but you need that depth,” said Stevens on talkSPORT (14:34, Friday June 14th).
“You look at that Manchester City squad, the Liverpool squad, and no disrespect but Spurs do not have that depth or that quality.
“And you want to compete at the top end you need it and Spurs will spend I think, and as long as they’ve got their recruitment process right, I think recruiting players is key, and they bring in the right ones.
“Which isn’t necessarily the most expense players, so if they get the right players, the right characters, the right people, the right talent, then yes I do think Spurs can chase the two outright best sides in the country next season.”
OPINION
Stevens, who featured 147 times for Spurs, clearly wants his former side to do well, but he doesn’t seem to have the grandest of ambitions for them. If Tottenham make several good signings then surely they should be aiming to do more than just keep up with Man City and Liverpool. Tottenham should be aiming to beat the pair to silverware. Granted Tottenham have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to the Premier League, they finished 27 points behind Man City after all, but with the right signings than it’s possible they can beat Pep Guardiola’s side to the post next season. However if Daniel Levy doesn’t sanction several signings being made this summer, then it will be just a success if Spurs secure their top-four finish. While Chelsea will likely be weaker next season after losing Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and Manchester United seem to be all in a muddle after a terrible end to their 2018/19 campaign, it doesn’t mean Spurs can afford to drop the ball once again in the transfer window.
