After pushing Chelsea all the way last season, Brendan Rodgers would have hoped that his side would kick on this year. I’m sure he’d like to have still been in the mix to win the Premier League title at this stage this season. Instead, his side is deeply embedded in the battle for a top four slot and they’re pinning their chances of silverware on victory in the FA Cup.
All in all, it’s a step down from last season. Still, it strikes me that there’s not too much to be concerned about. Most of Liverpool’s problems this season came from an over reliance on Mario Balotelli, who wasn’t producing the goods. Now that Daniel Sturridge is fit, things seem to be running a little smoother.
Still, Brendan Rodgers will want to make sure that his team comes back stronger than ever next year. This could be why Liverpool are picking up links to Benfica’s star winger, Eduardo Salvio. The Reds have been sending scouts to watch the Argentine in action for a number of months now. (Source: The Metro)
Could they be about to lodge a bid?
It’s certainly easy enough to see why Brendan Rodgers might be interested in signing the 24-year-old. Salvio’s super efficient in the final third. Back in 2012/13, he scored 13 goals and made 10 assists during 51 games. In 2013/14, he struggled with injury problems and didn’t play as much as he would have liked.
But this year, he’s been back to his best. He’s played 30 times this season, he’s scored 12 goals and he’s made 5 assists. He rarely makes a poor decision when he’s in front of goal.
This explains (and helps to justify) his £43.6m price-tag. This kind of figure will doubtless have Brendan Rodgers running for the hills. Still, the aforementioned source claims that Liverpool could seal a deal for a fee below that.
Let’s hope that Rodgers can push his price down and close this sale.
What’s your take? Is Eduardo Salvio a good option for The Reds? Who else should they look at this summer?
