Arsenal aren’t exactly short of midfield options, but Arsene Wenger does like to bolster this area of the pitch. It would surprise very few pundits if The Professor were to sign another option in this area of the pitch this summer.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are in the market for Internacional’s star midfielder, Charles Aranguiz. The source suggests that Arsene Wenger is looking to tap into Alexis Sanchez’s relationship with the Chilean international in order to close the deal. Let’s hope that the ex-Barcelona man can be persuasive.
The 25-year-old is a hugely versatile talent. He’s capable of playing as a defensive midfielder or further up the pitch. He’s even played as a right winger at different stages throughout his career. If you give this man a job to do, he’ll do it and he’ll probably do it well.
On the face of things, there are very few gaps in his overall game. He’s a tenacious character, who loves to slam into tackles, win the ball back and break up opposition play. In that regard, he could probably give Francis Coquelin a run for his money.
He’s also good when he’s on the ball and he’s more than capable of picking out a defense splitting pass. Oh and let’s not forget his confidence in front of goal either. In 37 games for Internacional, he’s found the back of the net 10 times. That’s a fantastic return for a central midfielder (who sometimes operates directly in front of the back four).
The aforementioned source claims that Arsene Wenger is looking to offer the Brazilian club £21m, whilst noting that it may not be enough to close the deal. Internacional are thought to be holding out for £25m, which is a lot of money for a player who’s relatively unheard of outside of South America.
Still, you can’t deny his versatility or his ability. I wouldn’t be disappointed to see Arsene Wenger close this summer deal.
What’s your take? Is Charles Aranguiz a good fit for The Gunners?
