Wolves are still looking to secure a January transfer deal for Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook.
The Old Gold have been linked with a move for Gomes in recent weeks and were apparently on the verge of landing a £15m deal for him.
However, the club were at risk of seeing the midfielder get snatched out of their grasp as Lyon reportedly made a financially superior offer to sign Gomes.
With time ticking down before the January transfer window closes, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding Wolves’ pursuit of the 21-year-old.
In a recent Twitter post, Crook said this about the matter.
He said: “Wolves still hoping to sign Joao Gomes. Player has made it clear this is the move he wants. Could develop in next 24 hours.”
His latest season with Flamengo saw the midfielder make 63 appearances for his side across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing two assists in the process.
With 29 appearances to his name in the Brazilian league, Gomes ended the campaign with the highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (118) at the club.
Have you been pleased with Wolves' January transfer window so far?
Yes
No
This highlights the hard work the youngster puts in off the ball and what he’d be able to offer Julen Lopetegui’s side if they end up bringing him to Molineux.
Bearing in mind how Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves has previously been linked with a move away from the club, as well as having Joao Moutinho set to see his contract expire in the summer, it could be said that Lopetegui sees Gomes as a potential replacement for one of his current midfield figures.
With all of that in mind, as well as Crook revealing that the player is keen on joining the Old Gold, we feel that the club should get this deal over the line as soon as they can.
