Chelsea are reportedly looking to secure a summer transfer deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana to potentially replace current shot-stopper Edouard Mendy.
This season has seen the 31-year-old make 11 appearances for Graham Potter’s side across all competitions, with a shoulder injury keeping him out of action for a large period of time.
In those appearances, the Senegal international has conceded 15 goals and kept just one clean sheet.
Despite having over two years left on his contract, it has been claimed that the shot-stopper’s time at the west London club could be up in the near future, with a potential replacement already being eyed up.
According to a recent report from TuttoMercatoWeb (via Sport Witness), Mendy is facing a summer exit from Chelsea at the end of the season and Todd Boehly wants to replace him with Onana.
After making 214 appearances for his previous club Ajax, during which he kept 85 clean sheets, the 26-year-old joined Inter during the previous summer transfer window.
Since then, the Cameroonian, who has been lauded as an “excellent” player by Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, has kept 14 clean sheets in 27 appearances for the Italian club across all competitions.
Should Chelsea get rid of Edouard Mendy this summer?
Yes
No
Across his 16 Serie A appearances, Onana has faced 52 shots on target, saving 39 of them, leaving him with the second-highest save percentage (76.9%) in the division.
This makes it easy to see why Boehly think he would be a suitable replacement for Mendy should he find himself leaving Stamford Bridge this summer.
Taking into account how Kepa Arrizabalaga has been showing his worth in Mendy’s absence this season by racking up the highest save percentage in the Premier League (77.8%) and an overall performance rating of 6.96/10 from WhoScored, putting him as Chelsea’s fifth-highest rated player, it seems that if the club were to bring Onana in, he’d have a challenge on his hands to become their first-choice goalkeeper.
