Newcastle United have been urged by pundit Frank McAvennie to secure a summer transfer deal for Kieran Tierney.

The Tyneside have previously been linked with the Arsenal left-back, as have Real Madrid, with Carlo Ancelotti previously looking to sign the defender while he was in charge at Napoli.

With the next summer transfer window approaching, the subject of Tierney and his future has become the topic of conversation, with one pundit urging Eddie Howe’s side to land a deal for him.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie had this to say when asked if a transfer move for Tierney could be likely to happen at Newcastle this summer.

He said: “Of course. Real Madrid were looking at Tierney. I think he is the best left-back in the Premier League, I think he is different class.

“Arsenal are not playing him at left-back because they are playing [Oleksandr] Zinchenko instead but he is not as defensively-minded as Tierney.

“Tierney is not bad at going forward but he is not getting involved in midfield like Zinchenko does and that is what the manager wants.

“Going to Newcastle would be a great piece of business, I think he would definitely strengthen the defence. They have got the money to go and spend and get Tierney.”

Since joining the north London club from Celtic back in 2019, the full-back has made 114 appearances for the Gunners across all competitions, scoring five goals and delivering 13 assists along the way.

Tierney’s previous league campaign saw the left-back show how much of a capable attacking player he is by racking up the joint-second highest number of crosses into the penalty area (12) at Arsenal, highlighting what he’d be able to offer Newcastle.

This season has seen the Scotsman start just four of the 18 Premier League games he’s featured in prior to Sunday’s match against Crystal Palace.

His lack of regular starts, therefore, could make a switch to Newcastle a tempting prospect for the 25-year-old defender if he’s likely to get more game time there.
